OUR HISTORY

The history of the Hotel Casona Oaxaca dates back to 1896, when a well-known local inn adopted the name "Hotel Francia", thus formalizing its services at a time when Oaxaca was under the influence of the Porfiriato. During those years, the city witnessed a cultural and social boom, becoming one of the most prestigious destinations in Mexico, attracting important personalities from politics, art and literature.

Notable guests include the celebrated English writer DH Lawrence, who spent time in the legendary room 218 in 1925. Inspired by his stay in Oaxaca, Lawrence wrote some of his most important works, establishing the place as a refuge for brilliant minds.

However, the hotel's history was not without tragedy. On January 14, 1931, a devastating earthquake shook the city, leaving the Hotel Francia severely damaged. Despite this, the building was rebuilt with engineering that would make it one of the most earthquake-resistant buildings in Oaxaca, capable of withstanding earthquakes of up to 9.0 on the Richter scale.

The hotel also witnessed key historical moments in Oaxacan identity, such as the beginning of the city's IV Centenary festivities in 1932, which gave rise to the Guelaguetza, one of the most important celebrations in the state.

Over the years, Hotel Francia suffered a deterioration in both its infrastructure and its brand. It was at the beginning of the 21st century when it was decided to transform it into Hotel Casona Oaxaca, modernizing its facilities and reducing its capacity to offer a more personalized experience. Preserving the historical essence in its two courtyards—the Juárez courtyard with its Oaxacan tones and the French courtyard with its elegant yellow color—the hotel has evolved to combine history, peace and modernity in one place.
